FOR #throwbackthursday this picture of the Warrington Wolves subs bench at Wilderspool Stadium in 2001 struck a chord.

The man in the middle, Steve Georgallis, is very prominent in the NRL at the moment and will be over in the UK as head coach of the first ever Greek side to compete in the Rugby League World Cup.

Georgallis made 10 appearances for The Wire in 2001 before his season ended early with a ruptured Achilles' tendon.

That year he offered the then Wire head coach Daryl Van de Velde great utility value, starting games at hooker, loose forward, second row, scrum half and stand off.

He had already distinguished himself at the top level in Australia with Eastern Suburbs Roosters, Western Suburbs Magpies and the Wests Tigers, while also enjoying spells in the southern hemisphere with Carlisle and Wakefield Trinity before his playing days ended at Warrington Wolves.

Now, 52, he is the man in charge of trying to resurrect Canterbury Bulldogs' season having been appointed interim head coach until the end of the season following the resignation of Dean Pay.

But Bulldogs, who added England and ex-St Helens prop Luke Thompson to their playing roster earlier this summer, currently remain rooted to the foot of the NRL ladder with only two wins from 14 outings.

With Georgallis in the Wire subs bench picture is, left, former Tonga international prop Martin Masella.

Masella, who played in the first Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford for Leeds in 1998, joined Warrington from Wakefield where his contract had been terminated due to the club's financial difficulties at that time.

The 50-year-old also played for Balmain Tigers, Illawarra Steelers and South Sydney.

He played in the front row for Tonga when they gave New Zealand the fright of their lives in a group game at Wilderspool in the 1995 Rugby League World Cup.

These days he is the general manager of a moving and cleaning business in Sydney.

And on the right of Georgallis in the subs bench picture above is Ian Sibbit.

The Wiganer, equally at home in the second row or centre, came through Warrington's youth ranks and ended up having two spells with the club, having initially left to have a successful stint in Australia with Melbourne Storm.

He went on to play for Salford Red Devils and Bradford Bulls before retiring in 2012.

Sibbit still has roles in sport.

The 39-year-old is a UK anti doping educator and player agent.
