STEVE Price says any player who drops out of his Warrington Wolves side for Sunday’s trip to Wakefield Trinity can feel hard done by.

Although Anthony Gelling’s suspension may make his decision slightly easier, the expected return of Gareth Widdop to the fold presents Price with a quandary.

Widdop is in contention for his Wire debut at the Mobile Rocket Stadium after recovering earlier than anticipated from the ankle injury that delayed the start of his season.

Given the impressive form of youngster Matty Ashton at full-back, Price may well be reluctant to move stand-in scrum-half Stefan Ratchford back to the number one shirt.

However, he says he will “do what’s best for the team” when he picks his side to face Trinity.

“I’ve got a good selection headache,” he said.

“All the players who have taken the field over the past few weeks have contributed to the performances.

“Whoever does get left out, it will be a bit of hard luck for them.

“In saying that, I’ve got to do what’s best for the team at Wakefield this week.

“All will become clearer later in the week.

“I’ve been really pleased with how the team have conducted themselves over the first couple of weeks.

“We’ve shown a lot of fighting spirit and courage and we’ve played some good rugby, too.

“The challenge now is to back it up and be a consistent rugby team, and that starts at Wakefield on Sunday.

“We’re in a good place, the boys are working hard and that’s all I can ask for at this stage.”

Price will name his 21-man squad for the game this afternoon.

Co-captains Chris Hill (suspended) and Jack Hughes (hernia) remain unavailable, so Ratchford will once again captain the side.

While the club have been rocked off the field by news of Gelling’s arrest on suspicion of wounding with intent, they will be keen to continue their encouraging start to 2020 on it.

Last Thursday’s 19-0 win over defending champions St Helens followed up a promising display largely with 12 men in defeat at Wigan the previous week, but Price says they will not get carried away.

“We’ve got good senior players within our squad who reinforce our messages across our team,” he said.

“It’s coming up to round three. We’ve done nothing yet.

“Wakefield will throw different challenges at us than the ones St Helens and Wigan have done

“They have a strong back five who carry the ball very well, so we have to be strong when they are coming out of back field.

“Players like Kelepi Tanginoa, Jacob Miller and Kyle Wood can hurt you if you’re not sticking to your systems.”
