IT may come as a surprise to many that some of the world’s finest squash players ply their trade here in Warrington.

Tonight, three of the world’s top 50 players will be in action as Warrington – gunning for their fourth league title in a row – set out for revenge.

The visitors to Warrington Sports Club are Grove Park, the side who handed them their only defeat in 11 North West Counties Squash League Division One matches back in October.

This clash of top versus third is likely to be pivotal in the destination of this year’s league title.

Leading the charge for Warrington is likely to be Joel Makin, who is ranked number 12 in the world and is fresh from a quarter-final appearance at the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions in New York a fortnight ago.

Also among the Warrington contingent is world number 19 Adrian Waller, who is also ranked second in England and won both the Chicago and Montreal Open last year.

Skipper Andy Whipp leads the Walton Lea team, which will also have promising home-grown junior Ameel Talib and Cheshire over 35s champion Rob Taylor in its ranks.

Chief among the Grove Park threats is Chris Simpson, who is still ranked 41st in the world despite having recently retired from the professional circuit.

With over 160 squash members, Warrington is one of the largest clubs in the North West and have players of all levels, ages, and abilities.

The club has six squash courts of which four were recently extensively refurbished, including and a show court with excellent views for a large crowd, and a thriving squash community.

Warrington has seven mens’ teams in the North West Counties Squash League and a women’s team in the Cheshire Ladies League

Young players wanting to play squash for the first time can come down to the friendly Saturday morning sessions. The Junior section has benefited from exceptional coaching and support this season, resulting in a league-topping performance within the North West Counties Junior Squash League.
