PAUL Carden says Warrington Town missed “a massive opportunity” in drawing with league leaders South Shields.

The hosts played the second half with 10 men after Nathan Lowe was dismissed for a dangerous challenge on Mitch Duggan, but Yellows could not force a winner.

Indeed, Shields put them on the back foot for much of the second period, with the visitors indebted to Tony McMillan for making a superb save to deny Jason Gilchrist what could have been an unlikely winner.

Carden thought his side were “passive” after the interval having led through Ben Garrity’s scrambled effort, which was cancelled out by Robert Briggs’ long-range strike on the half-hour mark.

“A point here is a good point no matter who you are, but the game changes as its being played,” Carden said.

“The game changes when they go down to 10 men, but we played like we’d gone down to nine men.

“We turned our backs on responsibility and didn’t follow the plan. I’m massively disappointed and I’ve told a few people that.

“That’s a game where you have to take advantage and we didn’t.

“It takes a really good save from Tony McMillan to save a point for us.

“They should score when Tony makes that save – that should give us a lift but it didn’t.

“It was easy for them to deal with us. A couple of times, we passed with conviction but then we’d go away from it.

“The responsibility of players not on the ball showing for players who were was massively lacking. Passive is probably the right word for it.

“It’s a massive opportunity lost.”
