THE unique personality of Anthony Gelling should be embraced rather than suppressed, according to Warrington Wolves head coach Steve Price.
Gelling’s long-anticipated move to The Halliwell Jones Stadium from Widnes Vikings was confirmed on Sunday, with the former Wigan and New Zealand Warriors centre signing a two-year deal with The Wire.
He is joined at The Halliwell Jones Stadium by Vikings teammate Keanan Brand, who has penned a three-year contract.
Cook Islands international Gelling has gained popularity – and in some places notoriety – for his sense of humour, laid-back style and comedic videos posted on social media.
Price says 28-year-old Gelling “knows where he stands” in terms of his character, which he said was one of the first things they spoke about.
“With Anthony, he’s a player I’ve watched for a fair amount of time, even going back to his time at Wigan,” he said.
“He will give us something different to the centres we’ve had in the past in terms of his style of rugby.
“It is a challenge for me and the coaches to show people another side of Anthony.
“He knows where I stand with how he is. When we sat down with Anthony, that was one of the first things we spoke about.
“Ultimately though, we want to embrace Anthony’s personality and use it in the right ways to help the team.
