WOOLSTON Rovers stand just 80 minutes away from achieving their long-time goal of automatic promotion.

The past three seasons have ended in play-off heartbreak but victory over Heworth at Monk Sports Club on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm, will seal their place in National Conference League Division Two next season.

Head coach Mal Holt says his players full deserve to have created this opportunity for themselves.

However, he knows the prospect of beating a Heworth side who also hold promotion ambitions is a tough one – the visitors have lost only twice in the past three months.

“This is definitely our biggest game of the season due to the reward that we will get if we claim the victory,” he said.

“Our target at the beginning of the season was to gain automatic promotion and we are now just 80 minutes away from achieving that.

“The boys have been awesome all year and fully deserve to be where they are.

“This is going to be a very tough game – Heworth have been in superb form over the past three months, losing only twice – so we will ensure that we are at our best on the day.

“Our attack, defence and discipline will all need to be spot on and if they are, we will give ourselves a great chance of winning the game.”

Rovers set up their chance of glory with a midweek victory over Millom, with Holt’s side coming out 32-10 winners.

The visitors arrived late at Monk Sports Club and it showed as Woolston raced into a 20-4 half-time lead which proved pivotal.

Adam Files and Ryan Brown scored two tries each, with further scores coming from Harry Files and Ben Dixon, who also kicked four goals.

“The preparation wasn't ideal for us due to Millom arriving late – which was understandable considering the distance they had to travel and being in midweek – but we showed great spirit and character throughout,” Holt said.

“Our pace at the play-the-ball was unbelievable and that was a major contributing factor to us winning the game.”
