Frank Lythgoe's latest Warrington Anglers' Association column

A GOOD deed was rewarded when a junior member landed a personal best mirror carp of 20lbs at Appleton Reservoir.

Together with a friend, he had earlier cleared a mountain of rubbish left by swimmers making the most of the hot weather.

There are reports of roach catches there while others have landed the occasional carp, although one duo netted 11 during a night session.

Meanwhile committee member Ade Green had a busy stop last week on the River Dee at Shocklach where he fished a stick-float using maggot and caster to fill a net of roach, dace and small chub along with a couple of grayling and a trout.

Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner targeted Ackers Pit on their latest outing when they had an active session with more than 100 small rudd, roach and perch caught on waggler and maggot.

Mike Roberts reports a cracking catch of more than 20lbs of roach, rudd, perch and skimmers on a first visit to the Weaver Navigation in Northwich.

From a spot on the industrial estate near the rowing club he fished the pole at six metres, feeding groundbait and maggot with single on the hook for a bite every chuck.

Neil Plunkett visited Hurst Green on the River Ribble where he set out his stall for barbel on the feeder.

However he had only a couple of roach to show for his efforts.

A switch to a stick-float and loose-feeding maggot after that saw his fortunes change, catching a decent stamp of roach to 12oz.

Saturday's match on the Mersey was won by Bob Campbell who put 8-10-0 on the scales, a total boosted by a bonus 5lbs bream to which he added skimmers taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot.

Derek Bibby was second, fishing the same method, with 6-12-0 of skimmers and roach.

Jimmy Byrne's 10lbs net, consisting of a bonus 5lbs bream and skimmers taken on a groundbait feeder and red maggot, was enough to claim first prize in the Tom James Open at Mersey Walk.

Derek had to be content with another runners-up spot after landing 8-0-0 of skimmers, roach and perch - again on feeder.

In-form Rod Frazer was a victor in our match on Monday for a second successive week, this time on the Trent and Mersey Canal at Billinge.

Drawn on a peg near to the marina, he caught mainly roach - plus a few skimmers - on pole and caster for 9-1-2.
