A HANDFUL of Warrington Athletics Club runners are representing Cheshire in the English Schools Athletics Championships at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham today and tomorrow.
They are senior boys Jordan Jones (2000m steeplechase) and Joe Buckley (3000m), intermediate girl Ashley Nemits (300m), as well as junior girls Orla Gregory (1500m) and Meg Corker (75m hurdles).
Nemits and Corker go into the event highly ranked.
Corker, a student at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic College in Widnes, is currently ranked number one in the UK at 75m hurdles, while Nemits, who attends Bridgewater High School, is ranked second at 300m.
Jones (Lymm High School sixth form), Buckley (Barrow Hall College) and Gregory (Cardinal Newman High School) are ranked ninth, 32nd and 26th of the athletes eligible to run in their events.
The English Schools Athletic National Championships are the fourth largest athletics event in the world.
Organised entirely by volunteer teachers, it brings together the best athletes in each county in England to compete for the honour of being the best athlete in the country at their event.
Entry to the event is by virtue of athletes being selected by county team managers.
Prime consideration is given to performances at county championships, but other outstanding performances at other events may be taken into consideration.
Nearly all the UK Olympic athletics team members have featured in the ESAA Championships.
