BILL Last returned to Grey Mist Mere with Bruce Ruscoe on Saturday no doubt encouraged by a productive recent session.

The former reckons he put his companion 'on the flier' and that saw him land a list of specimens from 4-0-0 through to 9-3-0.

However Bill was more than happy with a best of 8-1-0.

Ian Johnson enjoyed a red-letter day on the Mount at Buckley, fishing pole and maggot.

He soon had roach feeding well and, after a hectic 90 minutes, he decided it was time to change to caster because he had been including them in his loose-fed red maggots.

Although his catch-rate slowed, there was a better stamp of the red-finned beauties.

He lost count of the numbers, but Ian said his catch did include cracking fish that were easily around 1.5lbs.

Dave Brooks ranked first in our match on Saturday fished at Kingsway allotments after landing 16-1-0 consisting of one bonus bream of 4lbs and backed up with 12lbs of roach caught on pole and maggot.

A spread of marginal weed is good for the river because it provides essential cover for fish but it is also encroaching on some pegs, prompting match organiser Ray Boden to advise members to include a rake in their kit.

Our Mersey Series match on Sunday concluded with it the biggest haul since the start of a new season when victor Kevin Hall produced four quality bream to 6lbs as part of a haul weighing 36-8-0.

His winning catch, taken on groundbait feeder and maggot, saw him with more than 20lbs to spare over second-placed Neil Buist who took 14-2-0.

Weights were down for our disabled and over 60s match on Monday at Pickering's Bridge, but the length was alive with fry and small fish which bodes well for the future.

Rod Frazer took first prize with a couple of perch, plus a roach, for 3-2-8 to edge Jimmy Byrne.
