JACK Hughes says The Wire’s defensive display was the most pleasing aspect of their victory over Wakefield Trinity on Friday night.

After conceding a try in the first minute, the hosts kept Trinity scoreless for the rest of the game as they ran out 30-6 winners.

Ryan Hampshire’s score in the game’s first set was something Hughes described as “unacceptable” but the rest of their showing without the ball pleased the second rower.

Like head coach Steve Price before him, he was also keen to highlight an improved disciplinary aspect which saw The Wire penalised only three times.

“We were disappointing last week but we’re back on the horse,” Hughes said.

“We thought it was a good performance – there were some good things in attack but defence was the main thing for us this week.

“That is what we’re happiest with – the early try was unacceptable and something we need to get out of our game but we’re very happy keeping them scoreless for 79 minutes.

“Discipline was one of our main focuses. We gave away six penalties in the opening few minutes last week and it’s something we weren’t happy with at all.

“To keep them to three penalties this week is something we’re happy with.”

> Post-match reaction from head coach Steve Price

The Wire remain six points behind Super League leaders St Helens, but have the opportunity to close that gap next week when Saints visit The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

They will go into the game as underdogs but co-captain Hughes is not concerning himself too much with that.

He also called on the Wire faithful to pack out the stands and make the game a sell-out.

“Getting a sell-out crowd would be nice – a packed house in a local derby at the HJ is the kind of game we want to play in,” he said.

“We’ll definitely be working hard this week in training.

“We have to make sure we do the little one-percenters right during the week. That way, we’ll be at our best come Friday.

“We don’t worry about favourites and underdogs. Our main focus has to be about what we do.”
