JOE Buckley broke a record that had stood for almost three decades on his home track on Saturday.

The Warrington Athletics Club youngster won senior 3,000m gold at Saturday’s Cheshire Schools Athletics Championships at Victoria Park, with his time of 8mins 41.1secs beating the previous competition record that was set in 1991.

Just behind him were clubmates Ben Webb, who came third in 9mins 40.5secs, and fourth-place Charlie Turnbull, who clocked 10mins 2.7secs.

While most of the club's members were competing for the Warrington school district, there were also some who were representing Mid-Cheshire and Ellesmere Port and Halton.

One of those was Meg Corker, for whom Saturday was also a very special day.

Representing Ellesemere Port and Halton, Corker set a championship best in the junior girls 75m hurdles by clocking 11.3secs.

Corker was also presented with a trophy for the best performance by a female athlete at the championships.

Also competing in the same race was Corker's clubmate Lisa Halliday, who was fourth as she finished in 12.9secs.

In total, Warrington Athletics Club members won 10 titles in competing for their school districts.

For the girls, Olivia Chamun won the junior girls javelin with a throw of 25.42m while in the senior age group, there were wins for Emma Davies (100m, 13.4secs), Olivia Baker (800m, 2mins 31.9secs) and Megan Kettle (hammer, 36.86m).

Joel Birchall was second in the intermediate 1500m – just ahead of clubmate Isaaq Ataullah – while Joe Roberts (intermediate 3000m) and Gus Schofield (intermediate high jump) came third in their events.

Buckley and eight of his Warrington clubmates were also in action at the Trafford AC Grand Prix last Tuesday – he finished ninth in the 3,000m series by clocking 8mins 48.31secs with Tom Greaves 12th in the same race in a personal-best 8mins 57.75secs.
