TWO promising weightlifters are getting ready to make their mark on a national stage.
David Smith, 15, and 13-year-old Elli McEvatt have both qualified for the Junior British Championships in October having impressed in a regional competition last month.
The pair, who are part of the youth weightlifting club at Pride Performance Gym on Old Liverpool Road, both won medals at the Northern Weightlifting Championships.
Despite having only taken up the sport eight weeks ago, Sandymoor High School student Elli won gold in the under 15s 55kg class and broke three competition records.
She recorded personal bests of 43kg in the snatch and 55kg in the clean and jerk.
Sankey High School year nine pupil David won gold in the under 15s 102+kg class having also set new personal bests in the snatch (73kg) and clean and jerk (88kg)
Two more Pride members – 10-year-old Darcy Ruddock and Sam Kilgannon, 11, are in action at the British Development Open in Coventry on Sunday.
