JORDAN Jones raced in a 3,000m steeplechase race for the first time at the weekend…and came away with a gold medal.

The Warrington Athletics Club youngster won the under 20s race at the Northern Championships, stopping the clock at 10mins 10.86secs.

Training partner Joe Buckley was also a gold medal winner as he smashed his 5,000m personal best by almost 15 seconds – he completed the race in 15mins 17.83secs.

A little closer to home, Leighton Sharman finished in the top 10 of the Birchwood Park 5km trail race on Thursday.

He came seventh in 17mins 8secs while clubmate Louise Blizzard was 42nd overall but her time saw win the women’s over 40s age group.

Jonny Leatherbarrow was also in trail race action over 10 tough kilometres in Abersoch on Saturday.

On a course that took in tarmac, country tracks and with a last mile along a sandy beach, Leatherbarrow finished 25th in a time of 39mins 58secs.

Mervyn Ward made his way to Surrey on Sunday to compete in the Dorking 10-mile road race, where he finished 122nd overall in 1hour 9mins 27secs to place him fourth in the over 60s age group.
