HOPES are high that junior rugby league players across Warrington will feel inspired after training sessions with Warrington Wolves players and coaches.

Hundreds of youngsters at seven Warrington clubs were simultaneously taught skills and provided with tips by Wire stars such as Blake Austin, Josh Charnley and Ben Westwood in Wednesday night’s ‘community blitz’.

Around 130 children from the under nines age group through to under 15s were put through their paces at Monk Sports Club, where Wire and England Knights centre Toby King was pleased to share what he has learned as a professional player.

Warrington Guardian:

“It went great. The kids are class and all trained really well,” said the 22-year-old.

“I loved playing rugby as an amateur, it’s some of the best times in your life with your mates so it’s good to give something back.

Warrington Guardian:

“I just wanted to teach them about getting their shift plays going, passing the ball out wide, and some of them have got really good skills.

“If we can come down to training and inspire them to want to be a Super League player one day, perhaps, then we’ve done our job. As long as they play for Warrington!”

Warrington Guardian:

Pete Bowden, Woolston Rovers coach coordinator and head coach of the under nines golds team, added: “Players and staff from the first team squad, the academy squad and the Foundation have been to all the community clubs in Warrington.

“And they’ve delivering little potted sessions, a little snapshot of what they would do in training at the Wolves themselves.

Warrington Guardian:

“They’re passing on they’re knowledge to these youngsters starting out on their own journey.

“When you’ve got the likes of Blake Austin, Bryson Goodwin and Toby King, who have performed at the highest level on the biggest stages, that can’t fail to inspire these young people who are starting out themselves.

Warrington Guardian:

“Maybe it will push some of them on to bigger and better things in the game and be the very best that they can be.”

It seems only right that The Wire invest in their community in this way.

Warrington Guardian:

After all, the club’s players of the future were potentially on some of those fields on Wednesday evening.

Helping to keep a close eye on things were head coach Steve Price, his assistants Andrew Henderson and Lee Briers, head of rugby operations Kylie Leuluai, under 19s academy and under 16s scholarship coaches Chris Rudd and Gary Chambers.

Warrington Guardian:

“Warrington have got a really good relationship with their community clubs,” added Bowden.

“We’ve had coaching seminars already with Gary Chambers from the Foundation.

Warrington Guardian:

“The one which Woolston Rovers sat in was a defensive one for all the coaches in the club.

“Steve Price sat in until about 9.30pm, giving up his time.”
