STEVE Price hailed Daryl Clark as Super League’s best hooker following his virtuoso display in the Challenge Cup victory over Wigan Warriors.

Clark scored a superb first-half try in The Wire’s 26-24 victory and caused chaos in the Wigan defence with his running game.

When asked if he felt there were any players in Clark’s position better than him in Super League, Price answered: “I don’t think so.

“He’s been really consistent over a number of weeks. He’s been knocking out really consistent displays and his running display today was fantastic.

“He got knocked around a little bit early on but played tough today. He got over the advantage line and caused havoc.”

> Action and tries as Wire edge out the Pies

In a full-throttle contest, Wolves never shook the Warriors off and needed a late Stefan Ratchford penalty to seal victory.

Bryson Goodwin, Jack Hughes and Ryan Atkins scored their other tries and Price was pleased to see his side “find another level” when the game was finely poised.

He also felt his side ran into Wigan’s best display so far in 2019.

> Wire 26 Wigan 24 as it happened

“It had a bit of everything, didn’t it? It was a tough game but we expected it,” he said.

“I thought that’s the best they’ve played all season. They showed a lot of heart out there and were very courageous.

“We could have executed a bit better at times – I get that – but when the game was in the balance, I was proud when we found another level.

“Even when Charners (Josh Charnley) dropped that ball near the end, we stayed composed.

“There’s a huge amount of belief in our team. Everyone was nice and calm to turn them away.

“I thought Sitaleki Akauola had some really big moments throughout the game. He brought some power-running and splattered a few blokes.”

The quarter-final draw was made following the game and paired Price’s side with Hull Kingston Rovers.

> Wire's Challenge Cup quarter-final opponents revealed

“There’s no easy games now,” the Wire boss said.

“We’ve got Hull KR up there. Nothing changes for us – we respect all opposition and we’ll prepare well when that time arises.

“We’ll enjoy this for what it is but we’ll refocus tomorrow for the game against Hull FC.”

Price also confirmed his side picked up no injuries and that wingers Tom Lineham and Jake Mamo could be in contention to return against Hull FC next week.
