Waterhead Warriors 10 Woolston Rovers 38
BY stunning the league leaders on their own patch, Woolston Rovers sent out a statement to their National Conference League Division Three rivals.
The Green and Golds scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to leave their hosts – who had lost just once in 2019 before Saturday – shell-shocked.
Justin Becker and Matt Taylor both scored twice while Ryan Brown, Harry Files and Alex Smith also got themselves across the whitewash, with Aaron Barber kicking two conversions and a penalty.
While hailing their finest showing of the campaign so far, Rovers head coach Mal Holt insisted there was plenty more his side could show.
“I am delighted with all the boys for the way they played – it was our best display of the season by far,” he said.
“To do that to the league leaders on their own pitch was a great effort.
“Our defence was top-drawer and our attack was far better than in previous weeks.
“We still have lots to improve on but we are getting there.
“We said in the sheds before the game that we needed to win and win comfortably to post a statement to the rest of the league and we certainly did that!
“We made a few positional changes this week and that gave us great balance and more attacking options.”
Woolston: Aaron Barber; Jack Holt, Justin Becker, Dan Fearnley, Wil Maudsley; Theo Holt, Billy Maunder; Ryan Hickman, Ryan Brown, Josh Sudlow, Alex Smith, Matt Taylor, Harry Files. Subs: Simon Bishop, Sam Roberts, Danny Griffiths, John Welch.
