Heworth 16 Woolston Rovers 20

A LATE Heworth fightback could not prevent Woolston Rovers extending their perfect start to the National Conference League Division Three season.

After Christian Taylor’s early try was cancelled out, Rovers took control as Justin Becker scored twice to go with a further effort from Aaron Barber, who also kicked two conversions, either side of the break.

The hosts reduced the deficit to six points with two late tries, but Woolston managed the game well to see out the victory.

“That was another tough game away from home but the boys dug deep and got us the two league points,” Rovers head coach Mal Holt said.

“The game was spoilt by some strange refereeing decisions, but we had to forget about them and keep control.

“Our defence was good for the most part but we lost concentration a few times, resulting in Heworth scoring a couple of easy tries.

“Our attack improved from last week and we started to see more of the things we are doing in training being brought into the game.

“We still have a lot to improve on but having three from three, with two of them away from home, is a great start for us and gives us a fantastic base to build from.”

Rovers welcome Drighlington to Monks Sports Club on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.
