YELLOWS' tendency to score late goals has dug them out of several holes this season. Today, it took them top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division

With leaders Farsley Celtic falling to a surprise home defeat to Witton, it looked as if the opportunity would pass them by as Nantwich Town led going into injury time in a game which saw Paul Carden's side fall 3-1 down.

However, with their last throw of the dice, Gray stole a leveller to take them to the summit as they came from two goals down to rescue a point.

Danny Glover’s double – one from the penalty spot – had put the impressive Dabbers in control after Mark Roberts had cancelled out an early opener from Sean Cooke, but Josh Amis kept up his own red-hot form to put Town back into the contest before the interval.

Cooke also had a penalty saved by Tony McMillan in a crazy first half in which both teams seemed to forget how to defend.

Town could have stretched the gap between themselves and their Cheshire rivals to 11 points with victory, but they ran into a Nantwich side determined to rouse their own title hopes.

It was them who took a deserved early lead – one of three entirely preventable goals Yellows conceded before the break.

They passed up multiple chances to clear the ball before giving away a free kick on the edge of their box, and dead-ball specialist Cooke curled unerringly into the top corner.

Nantwich were swarming all over Town and more dithering at the back gave them their first penalty.

Roberts allowed the ball to bounce and this let Jamie Morgan beat him to possession, prompting a foul from the home skipper and giving referee Ed Duckworth no option but to award a spot kick.

It seemed for all money that Cooke would double his tally, but he did not bank on McMillan guessing right to deny him.

Still, the Dabbers pressed on relentlessly with Joe Malkin and Louis Barnes both coming close with volleys.

At the other end, Tony Gray had a half-volley deflected wide but from the resulting corner, they struck.

Jack Dunn’s wicked delivery proved too much for the visiting defence to deal with and Roberts powered the ball home at the far post.

However, rather than pressing on, Yellows let their visitors back into the lead just three minutes later.

An almost carbon-copy decision befell the official as Morgan again was clipped by a ponderous Yellows defender – Alex Whittle this time the culprit.

That was where the similarities ended, though, as McMillan was sent the wrong way by Glover from the spot.

Confidence oozed through Nantwich, while Yellows struggled to gain any sort of rhythm.

Their usually rock-solid defence was shaky – a point proven by the visitors’ third goal.

Dave Raven was robbed of possession by Malkin, who strode through on goal and after his cross came right through to Morgan, he stood the ball up for Glover to acrobatically beat McMillan.

However, when all seemed lost, a familiar face provided a ray of hope.

A powerful run down the right wing from Bohan Dixon saw him tease a cross over for Tony Gray, who nodded the ball back for Amis to score his 10th goal in eight appearances.

That got Yellows on the front foot – a theme that continued the other side of half time.

The hosts forced a succession of corners but found the green wall tough to breach.

Amis had a golden chance to do just that when Dunn found him unmarked after a great run and cross, but his header was deflected just wide.

Ben Garrity then headed just over after being found by substitute Dylan Vassallo as Yellows started to push.

Gray then brought down a corner and fired goalwards, but Nantwich keeper Will Jaaskelainen produced a good save to keep it out.

As time ticked down, Yellows became more and more desperate for a breakthrough, but that was opening up counter-attacking opportunities for the visitors.

There was time for Garrity to have two more chances – one headed over and another header tipped over by Jaaskelainen.

However, from the resulting corner, Cantilever Park was sent into delirium.

With McMillan being sent up from the back, the ball came through to Gray who produced a superb finish into the bottom corner.
