PAUL Carden hailed Warrington Town’s discipline and organisation after they became the first side to beat South Shields at home this season.

First-half goals from Josh Amis and Jack Dunn proved enough to secure a 2-1 win for Yellows and render Nathan Lowe’s reply irrelevant.

Town had to survive a late onslaught as the hosts sought to protect their unbeaten record at Mariners Park, but Carden’s side stood firm.

“It’s a massive result because no-one has been here and done that this season. I got told it was 21 or 22 games since they lost at home,” he said.

“They put us under a lot of pressure late on, which we’d expect, but we were resilient, disciplined and we held our shape.

“We could have passed it better at times in the second half – we worked openings and should have done a bit better on the counter.

“You knew they wouldn’t get anything through because somebody would block it. That’s a big thing to have in the team.

“We never know when we’re beaten and we don’t give things away too easily.

“It’s a big result, but nothing’s done. It only means we’ve gained three points in the grand scheme of things.”

Yellows had to adapt to a change of shape – both pre-match and during the game – from their hosts as they dominated possession at Mariners Park.

However, they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a Town defence that has established itself as the meanest in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

“When we saw the teamsheet, I thought they had gone back to a back three,” he said.

“We worked on the diamond shape in training and then changed it before the game. It took a bit of time for us to work them out.

“It was a sloppy goal to concede because they do have a very definite way of playing.

“They have four very good footballers in midfield. They rotate, move well and cause you problems.

“If you don’t adapt, they move you around and get the better of you. At times they did, but when we held our shape we frustrated them.

“Whilst they still had the lion’s share of the game, I don’t think Tony (McMillan) has had too many saves to make.

“Our discipline and organisation was outstanding and that’s full credit to the lads for taking the instructions on.”
