PHILIP Brown has had a series of productive sessions at Grey Mist Mere, starting last Thursday.

Despite high winds, he caught five tench with the best at 7-12-0.

All were caught using a block-end feeder with three maggots on the hook and fake corn on the hair.

On Monday he landed only two fish; a tench of 5-12-0 topped by a mirror carp weighing in at 20-4-0.

Two tench around 6½lbs followed the next day.

There is still plenty of predator action on the Bridgewater Canal and Shaun Kennedy reports catching three perch there on Sunday, with the best around 2lbs.

He also landed two pike, weighing seven or eight pounds, in between.

Shaun used a green fluorescent rubber drop-shot lure to 5lbs BS line.

A reminder to members who fancy trying their hand: in the interests of fish welfare, always carry an unhooking mat.

Thanks to those members who have posted advice on our Facebook page regarding a new stretch on the Weaver Navigation.

A postcode nearest to the start, at Frodsham swing-bridge, is WA7 3GF and that takes you to houses approximately 100 yards away.

I've had encouraging conversations with members who have fished there in the past when they caught mixes of roach, hybrids, skimmers, perch, and quality bream.

Some time ago I took a fish-finder that showed large shoals in parts; it's definitely worth a look.

It was hard work for participants in our Mersey Series match at Victoria Park on Sunday, and newcomer Kevin Hall needed only 1-8-0 to record his first win.

He fished a groundbait feeder with red maggot and pinkie on the hook to catch small roach and hybrids.

Second-placed Mike Dench also used feeder tactics for his two fish; a tiny roach, plus a bonus chub for a weight of 0-13-0.

Following a week's rest because the canal was frozen, our regulars were happy to be back on the cut again for Monday’s disabled and over 60s match at Hough’s Bridge.

George Hollis held off Jimmy Byrne, who finished as runner-up, when he put together a winning catch of 4-1-10 made up of roach and perch caught on bread and pinkie.
