I KNOW a few members have visited the new stretch on the Weaver navigation which runs from the swing bridge on the A56 at Frodsham (details are in my annual letter).

A new lock, which is clearly labelled, has now been fitted and it can be opened with our standard key.

Committee member Mike Dench tried his hand for a couple of hours but didn’t even have a sniff of a bite – not surprising really as the water had been frozen until now.

However, I am reliably informed that there have been reasonable catches of quality roach during warmer weather.

It is what I would term ‘wild fishing’ where you go and make your own swim and accept the challenge. Time will tell.

I did mention last week that the new 2019 memberships had begun to be posted out, well – the last remnants are now in the post.

On receipt, the 2018 one is invalid and the new one must be paid before fishing any Association waters.

If you haven’t received yours by weekend please do not hesitate to give me a ring on the number below.

Our Sunday Mersey Series at Mersey Walk – understandably with all the snow melt water – saw low weights.

Jimmy Byrne was the clear winner when he fished bread punch on a groundbait feeder set-up. He caught 20 roach for a weight of 3lbs 4ozs 14drs.

Mike Dench and Roy Everson were joint runners-up with 0-9-11. Mike had only a single roach whereas Roy managed four smaller roach.

Monday’s disabled and over 60s match on an iced-over Bridgewater Canal was understandably cancelled. A disappointment I am sure to the regulars who week after week support this fixture.

I would describe them in the nicest way as a cracking bunch who are always willing to welcome and help newcomers.

So, if you fancy fishing matches in a friendly atmosphere where you will meet new friends and undoubtedly enjoy the banter, join Warrington Anglers and give it a try.

Keep those catch reports coming – good, bad, or indifferent – as they help follow members to gauge how waters are fishing, plan their outings and they give me something to write about!

WAA headquarters at 52 Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7pm and 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription or night permits.
