WHILE many will be putting their feet up over Christmas, Jack Hughes will carry on training hard.

The Warrington Wolves squad have just finished pre-season training for the festive period and are not due to reconvene until January 3.

Hughes had only recently rejoined the group after being given an extended break following his exertions for England Knights in Papua New Guinea.

With that in mind, the second-rower – who has just signed a three-year contract extension with The Wire – says he will continue to put the hours in while still spending time with his family.

“I’ll have only had two weeks of training under my belt, so I’m going to keep training over Christmas,” he said.

“I won’t just be ticking over either. I’ll keep training hard rather than having a full break.

“It’s good that some of the boys will get that 11 or 12 days off though as they have been working hard for five weeks.

“I’ll keep training over Christmas while still enjoying the time with my family.”

Before they break up, the Wire squad will go on an army camp later this week in order to build team morale.

Hughes was part of the squad that went through a similar style of training last year and gave an insight into what the players would be up to.

He also says the camp is a great way of finding out who the leaders are within the group.

“It’s so tough. When we went on last year’s it didn’t stop raining and we were at it for 24 hours non-stop,” he said.

“We had a bag of rice each to last us for 24 hours, so we had very little food.

“I’m expecting more of the same this year, if not worse!

“You go to some pretty dark places on those camps – places you’ll never go to on a rugby field.

“At those times, it’s up to those who are doing well and coping to pull the others through and make sure they finish it.

“It’s a great way of bonding as a team while finding out who the leaders are at the same time.”
