YOU got the sense it meant a lot to Warrington's Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard when he played a leading role in Wayne Rooney's England farewell international win against USA at Wembley last night.

The Longford 25-year-old's stunning curling effort put Gareth Southgate's men 1-0 in front and his third goal in England colours on his 21st international appearance was the highlight of a straightforward home victory.

As he does, the former Penketh United junior celebrated in style and later, in the 57th minute, the right winger made way for his former clubmate to enjoy off the bench a hero's last hurrah on what was Rooney's 120th game for his country - a record for an outfield player.

Lingard will hope to feature again when England end their UEFA Nations League campaign at home to Croatia on Sunday, seeking revenge for the World Cup semi-final extra-time defeat last summer.
