CHANGES may be afoot at Warrington Town as Paul Carden looks for a solution to their problems in front of goal.

Yellows boast the Evo-Stik Premier Division’s best defence having conceded just seven times, but they are struggling to make an impact in the final third.

Having netted only 21 times in 15 league games, they are the joint-lowest scorers in the top half and Carden admits it is a problem that needs rectifying quickly.

He is not ruling out moving away from their usual 4-4-2 system for Saturday’s game against Basford United, who by contrast are the division’s most potent attacking team having netted 44 times already.

“We’ve just lost our way a little bit in the attacking third,” he said.

“In certain games we have created a load of chances and not scored, like Grantham, Nantwich and the Halifax home game.

“In others, like at Hednesford on Saturday, we’ve not created enough. Without overbaking it, we have to look at the reasons why.

“We’re never going to concede a lot of goals because we’ve got good defenders, but at the moment one goal is looking like costing us if we’re not putting our chances away or creating them.

“We have to look at a change in personnel for sure, possibly a change in tactics.

“I believe we’ve got good attacking options. I think we’re strong but for some reason it’s not quite happening.

“I’ve got to look at myself for that and think how to get the best out of these players.

“There’s probably arguments for and against the system we play, but the lack of goals is proving that something is not right.”

Some supporters have been calling for a new striker to be recruited, but Carden says the solution is not that simple.

“Is anybody in the league above going to let their best forward go, and is he going to want to drop down?” he said.

“Nobody in our division is going to let their forwards go without getting a fee for them.

“You could look at the top scorers from the league below, but why are they in the league below?

“There’s a lot of looking into it, but I believe we have better attacking options than we had last season.

“It is worrying, because if you look at Scarborough, they have two players that have 22 league goals between them.

“I think we’ve had eight goalscorers, and one of them is Richard Brodie who’s gone.

“I’m not one of those who sits down and thinks it has to be me who does everything. I want to know what the players are seeing in front of them on the pitch.

“It’s easy for it to be what I say goes, but I want their input. I want to know what they are feeling and seeing.

“We’ll see what comes of that and then work on that basis.”
