PAUL Carden says today’s victory at Grantham Town stemmed from some harsh conversations with his Warrington Town squad in training.

Bohan Dixon and Jack Mackreth struck late at The Meres as Yellows ended a five-game winless run in all competitions on Saturday.

Town dominated most of the game but did not make it count until Dixon struck 11 minutes from time, and Carden says his side always ran the risk while the game was goalless.

However, he was in no doubt that the game ended with the right result.

“We spoke this week about how we’re not good when we go long and when we play direct,” he said.

“Some of the stuff we played today made it a deserved win.

“We played to our strengths and we merited the three points.

“We should have taken the lead on a few occasions before we did, but you always run that risk when you don’t.

“We opened them up time and time again. They showed a resilience and it looked like they were playing for their new manager.

“I told the lads at half-time that we had to keep playing football. If we’d have gone long, it would have just come straight back at us.

“We scored a couple of good goals. Arguably it could have been more but we have to be pleased, especially with the clean sheet.

“We had to rattle a few on Thursday, because there were a few lads feeling sorry for themselves.

“We’ve come here today and shown what we’re about.”

Yellows were aided in their pursuit of three points when Gingerbreads striker Remaye Campbell was sent off for a late tackle on Adam Carden.

However, the Warrington boss admits he thought the decision to dismiss Campbell was harsh.

He also addressed an incident in which Dylan Vassallo was booked for simulation as he went down under a challenge inside the box.

Town were awarded a penalty late on – which Mackreth converted – after Alex Whittle was fouled.

“We were on the other side of the pitch from it and the referee was right there,” said Carden on Vassallo’s booking.

“He’s obviously felt there wasn’t enough in it and he’s booked Dylan.

“If he has dived, then he’s right to have booked him.

“The second one definitely was a penalty. Their defender was the wrong side of the ball, he let it bounce across him and doesn’t see where Whitts is.

“It’s a harsh red. He’s off the deck so it gives the referee a decision to make.

“If I’m in their dugout, I would feel hard done by.

“At the same time, I would ask the striker why he jumped in like that.

“After that, I thought we had more control.

“We used the ball well all day but when you have a man extra, obviously you have that little bit more time.”
