Warrington Town 2 AFC Telford United 1

WARRINGTON Town are potentially just 90 minutes away from the first round proper of the FA Cup after stunning National League North side AFC Telford United.

Bohan Dixon and Ben Garrity scored either side of half time at Cantilever Park as Yellows progressed past the third qualifying round for only the third time in their history despite Daniel Udoh’s late goal for the visitors.

Telford also became the third team from a higher division that Warrington have beaten in cup competitions since manager Paul Carden took the helm.

In a scrappy opening to the game, but sides showed plenty of commitment to the cause without much in the way of goalmouth action.

Telford had the game’s first chance when Mitch Duggan blocked a shot from Daniel Udoh but the rebound fell nicely to John McAtee at close range, but he poked wide when he ought to have done better.

The Bucks had other openings – with James McQuilkin shooting straight at McMillan before McAtee fired wide again from a half-cleared corner – while Yellows’ first real effort came when Robbie Evans cut in from the left but dragged his shot wide.

However, the complexion of the game changed in first-half injury time.

Duggan overlapped down the right and sent in a sumptuous cross for Dixon to rise high and loop a header into the top corner.

Town could have had another moments later when a through ball sent Jack Mackreth in behind the Telford defence, but goalkeeper Max Bromley raced off his line to just beat him to the ball.

Bucks manager Gavin Cowan sent his side out early for the second half, hoping it would prompt a response.

Initially, it did not as Dixon curled a volley just wide of Bromley’s far post.

Tony Gray then sprung the offside trap but his cross was stopped before it could reach Jake Kirby.

The visitors did not heed the warning signs, however, and Yellows made them pay.

A training-ground corner routine was not dealt with and the ball fell inside the box to Garrity, who still had his back to goal but he turned expertly to fire home.

Daniel Udoh then fired an effort narrowly over the bar as Telford looked to respond, with the same player heading tamely at McMillan as time ran out.

However, they did come agonisingly close to pulling one back when substitute Matthew Barnes-Homer prodded towards goal, but Duggan rushed back to clear the ball off the line with McMillan beaten.

They did get on the scoresheet when Udoh scrambled home to set up a grandstand finish, but Yellows hung on.
