Warrington Town 1 Mickleover Sports 0

YELLOWS ensured they would finish the week on top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division with their sixth league win in a row on Tuesday night

Dylan Vassallo’s early goal was enough to see off a spirited Mickleover Sports side as Town went beyond 13 hours since a side last breached their defence in the league.

Paul Carden’s side jump back above Basford United to the summit after they had overtaken them on Monday night.

More was expected of Yellows after their comfortable victory over well-fancied South Shields, but the tag of favourites was one they wore well early on as they made the perfect start.

Mitch Duggan’s cross was only half-cleared to the edge of the area, from where Vassallo watched the ball onto his left foot before volleying into the bottom corner.

As Town’s run without conceding a league goal ticked past the 12-hour mark, they were more concerned with adding to their tally at the other end.

Tony Gray had a glorious chance to do just that as he linked up superbly with Jake Kirby and found himself one-on-one with Mickleover keeper Lewis King, but he slid his shot agonisingly wide.

The visitors – without an away league win this season – were not without their moments as Nathan Jarman volleyed an effort just over Tony McMillan’s bar from distance.

Gray then had another great chance to double the lead on the stroke of half time, but he saw his effort tipped round the post by King.

The first chance of the second half fell to the visitors and it was a big one as John McGrath’s pull-back fell nicely for Evan Garnett, but McMillan produced a superb stop to deny him from point-blank range.

That set the tone for Mickleover controlling things in the early stages of the second half, although Kirby had the clearest chance as he shot straight at King from inside the box.

The game descended into a scrappy period as the visitors probed for an opening, but the Town defence was proving as stubborn as ever.

King then had to scramble to keep out a deflected Kirby effort as Yellows successfully protected their lead.
