WARRINGTON Athletics Club are celebrating relays success.

The under 17s men secured the North West Road Relays title on Saturday, with the under 11s boys joining them in also clinching the Cheshire Relay Championships crown as part of the same event at Delamere Forest.

There were further silver and bronze medal achievements to shout about.

In securing the under 17s North West and Cheshire gold, Isaaq Ataullah ran the first leg, handing over in 10mins 47secs in seventh place to Joe Buckley.

He moved the team through to second place with the third fastest overall time of 9mins 5secs and on the final leg Jordan Jones went into the lead about halfway round the lap.

Jones held on to win with the second fastest overall time of 9mins 47secs for a total time of 30mins 33secs.

Cheshire's best two times were those of Jones and Buckley, with Ataullah's the eighth fastest.

Jacob Pryor (25th, 4mins 53ses), Jack Marwood (fourth, equal second fastest time overall, fastest Cheshire time, 4mins 11secs) and Spencer Astbury (12th, 4mins 50secs) bagged the under 11s boys' Cheshire gold.

Erik Marshall (second, fifth fastest overall, 11mins 28secs), Ben Pucill (4th, 12mins 38secs) and Rory Gregory (fifth, 13mins 00secs) collected the Cheshire under 13s boys' silver medals.

Third spot in Cheshire, with Jack Green fourth fastest in the county, was earned by Green (20mins 46secs), Tom Greaves (21mins 24secs), Luke Gamble (21mins 20secs) and Pablo Artime (21mins 57secs) in the senior men/under 20s men event.

Bronze was also bagged by the under 13s girls' team of Molly Wormald (10th, 13mins 12secs), Emily Entwistle (fourth, fourth fastest in Cheshire, 12mins 49secs) and Lucie Davies (13mins 55secs).

Jess Connolly (fifth, 12mins 16secs), Orla Gregory (second, equal fourth fastest time, 11mins 38secs) and Maisie Bell (eighth, 13mins 15secs) claimed the Cheshire under 15s girls' bronze position.

The under 15s girls' B team, with Eva Ferris 13th in 13mins 06secs and Jasmine Jones 24th in 15mins 06secs, were incomplete with no final runner.

In the under 11s girls' race, Esme Heavey was knocked over in the frantic start but got up to move through from last to hand over in 12th place in a time of 4mins 55secs.

On the second leg Cara Gregory moved the team up into 11th place with 5mins 14secs and on the final leg her identical twin Sinead recorded 5mins 16secs to finish 15th overalls and fifth in Cheshire.

The under 13s girls' B team were led off by Alice Nicholson, who handed over in 30th place overall in 14mins 13secs to Harriet Bell who moved up to 26th with a run of 14mins 38secs handing over to Corin Smith for the final leg.

Smith clocked 15mins 18secs for the team to finish 31st and seventh in Cheshire.

The C team, with Amelia Smithers 29th on the first leg in 14mins 06secs and Evie Owens on the second leg 35th in 15mins 58secs, were unable to complete with no runner for the final leg.

In the under 20s/senior women’s race, under 20 Amy Nuttall was 27th on the first leg in 27mins 10secs and under 20 Rachel McQuillan moved up to 26th on the second leg with 27mins 38secs before masters runner Emma Pryor ran the final leg in 29mins 33secs to finish 27th, which placed them ninth in the Cheshire Championships.

The under 20s/senior men's B team had over 40s runner Paul Bagan 24th on the first leg in 22mins 17secs and over 55s Colin Bishop 27th in 22mins 30secs passing over to under 20s competitor Charlie Turnbull.

He handed over in 32nd, with 25mins 02secs, to Jack Wadsworth, 33rd in 23mins 43secs for a seventh place finish in the Cheshire competition.

Meanwhile, three Warrington Athletics Club runners tackled the World Masters Championships in Malaga, Spain.

Nick Jones finished in a highly creditable seventh place in the over 40s section of the 10k road race.

 

He was the first British athlete to finish an event in which more than 400 athletes competed, including a stacked field of former internationals and world champions.

Julie Hicken, competing in the over 55s age group, was sixth in her 100m heat at Malaga City Athletics Stadium in 15.66secs.

In the 300m hurdles heats on the next day at the Carranque Sports Centre fifth place in her heat in a personal best 62.22secs took her through to the final as the fourth non automatic qualifier.

 

Hicken finished eighth in the next day's final in 62.86secs and later on crossed the line fourth in her 200m heat in 31.57secs.

Steve Watmough completed the Warrington Athletics Club representation at the World Masters Championships in Malaga when he ran in the 5000m for over 55s at the Carranque Sports Centre.

Watmough finished in an excellent eighth place in a high-class race, recording 17mins 01.40secs.

David Gill won the over 60s age group of the Wirral 10K Road Race on Sunday, finishing sixth overall with 38mins 56secs.
