Warrington Town 2 Workington 0

YELLOWS kept their fourth clean sheet in a row as a superb first-half display was enough to earn them their first home win of the season

Tony Gray and Jack Mackreth struck at Cantilever Park as Workington were blown away before half-time by Paul Carden’s side.

Coming off the back of a thumping win at North Ferriby on Saturday, Town were clearly in confident mood and it showed in the early stages.

Dylan Vassallo’s flicked header was kept out at the near post by Reds stopper Aaran Taylor, who also had to be alert shortly afterwards to save Ben Garrity’s firm header from a Vassallo free kick.

The breakthrough was certainly coming and it duly arrived midway through the half when Mackreth overhit his cross, but Gray picked it up on the left corner of the penalty area and curled exquisitely into the top corner.

Just four minutes later, the lead was doubled and Mackreth was at the heart of things again.

He was found by Gray’s clever reverse ball and, after his initial shot was kept out by Taylor, he slammed home the rebound to mark his home debut with a goal.

Workington were struggling to get a foothold and the closest they came was via a Yellows player as Shaun Beeley slid a low cross just wide of his own goal.

Yellows were always a threat on the counter-attack as the visitors pushed, with Mackreth to the fore again as he powered down the right only to see Taylor keep out his effort.

The second half began in a similar vein to the first, with Gray heading straight at Taylor as Town continued to look the more threatening.

Workington did finally force Tony McMillan into a save when Mark Roberts’ slip let in Max Brown, but the Town stopper saved at his near post.

Taylor was sharp to deny Mackreth again on the break and from the resulting corner, Garrity somehow headed wide when unmarked.

McMillan then saved superbly after Scott Allison was released in behind before substitute Richard Brodie’s heavy touch denied him as he latched onto a short back-pass at the other end.

The visitors huffed and puffed, but Town held on for a well-deserved victory.
