RYLANDS enjoyed a mixed bank holiday weekend, bouncing back from Saturday’s home defeat by winning on the road on Monday.

They belied traffic problems and being allowed no time to warm up at Stone Dominoes to record a 3-1 victory in the North West Counties First Division South.

Having started brightly, Blues took the lead when Tom Croughan split the defence to find player/co-manager Stuart Wellstead, who beat the offside trap to score his fifth goal in as many games.

Despite dominating the rest of the half, Rylands could not make their advantage count and the hosts levelled before the break when Jordan Benton smashed home a penalty having been felled in the box by keeper Conor Yarwood.

However, Croughan fired Rylands back in front after the break before Ste Wolhulter sealed the victory late on.

The win came just 48 hours after falling to a disappointing 3-1 home loss to Cheadle Town at Gorsey Lane – a game in which they led at half-time after Wellstead converted a penalty.

“It was important for us to react after Saturday,” Wellstead said.

“Given the circumstances of not having a warm-up and being severely delayed arriving at the ground could have easily hindered us, but the lads showed great determination and character.

“We told the lads to stick at it and the goals would come, which they did.”
