Warrington Town 0 Farsley Celtic 2

WARRINGTON Town made an inauspicious start to the new campaign as they fell to a home defeat to Farsley Celtic

Yellows went into the break two goals down as Nathan Turner and Will Hayhurst struck for the visitors in the first half, and that proved terminal at Cantilever Park despite Celtic having James Spencer sent off.

It was a new-look Town team that took the field with six players making their league debuts.

They had plenty of possession in the opening period, but Farsley were content to let them have the ball and hit them on the counter-attack.

One of those breaks that gave Farsley the lead as Turner took advantage of numbers to create space for himself and crash a shot beyond the reach of Tony McMillan.

The Town stopper then made a decent stop from Nathan Cartman’s turn and shot before the hosts had an excellent chance to level.

Tony Gray intercepted a misplaced pass inside the Farsley box and squared for strike partner Josh Amis with the keeper nowhere to be seen, but his shot did not have enough power and was cleared off the line.

Shortly after, McMillan was called into action as he made a superb stop to deny an unmarked Spencer from inside the six-yard area as Yellows failed to deal with a free kick.

However, he was powerless to stop Hayhurst doubling the visitors’ lead as the hosts once again failed to fully clear a set piece and the ex-Warrington man flashed a fizzing long-range effort into the corner.

Gray volleyed wide when well placed at the other end, but Town could not find a response before the break.

Town tried to force the issue after the interval, but found little joy against a well-organised Farsley defence.

However, Adam Hughes came ever so close when his thumping header from a corner was cleared up onto the crossbar.

Amis then headed a cross from substitute James Caton wide as Yellows huffed and puffed without testing Farsley keeper Ed Hall.

Spencer was dismissed with time running out for a second yellow card – both for kicking the ball away – but it made little difference as the visitors held on.
