Woolston Rovers 28 Millom 14

HIGH-FLYING Millom were shellshocked as Woolston Rovers hit them with their best display of the season on Saturday.

Rovers trailed at the break and were eight points behind in the early stages of the second half, but roared back in the final quarter to claim an impressive win.

Harry Files scored two of Woolston’s tries, with Lewis Hoarty, Billy Maunder and Justin Becker also crossing.

Will Chadwick also kicked five goals for Rovers, who closed the gap on their third-placed opponents and Clock Face Miners in fourth.

“The boys were absolutely superb,” head coach Mal Holt said.

“We needed to produce our best if we were to defeat our promotion rivals and that is what they did, especially in the second half.”

Rovers took the lead when Files produced a powerful run to score on the left, but a converted try and a penalty edged Millom ahead at the break.

Despite having a man sin-binned, the visitors managed to extend their lead with another try but Woolston hit straight back when Chadwick’s inside pass allowed Hoarty to crash over.

The home side took over from that point as another inside ball, this time from Ryan Brown, put Files over for his second try before Becker’s break split the defence before he found Maunder, who cut back inside to score.

Becker went from provider to scorer for the game’s final try, somehow touching down after Glyn Roberts kicked into the in-goal area.

Rovers now have four games remaining, starting with the visit of Clock Face Miners to Monks Sports Club on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.
