THERE have been reports of good tench catches, plus carp, from Grey Mist Mere and Sandiway Lakes.

However the usual secrecy surrounds the latter.

It was refreshing though to see members breaking that trend and posting their catches on our Facebook page for the benefit of fellow members.

What a lot of carp anglers lose sight of is that the money to pay for annual stocking comes from anglers attracted to our club because of the sport we can offer.

I was happy to receive word from Jason Rowson after an afternoon session at Ackers Pit.

He fished waggler and maggot, with a few pellets for added attraction, but had nothing for an hour until the float dipped and he lost a decent fish.

The same thing happened again, so he re-tackled with another reel, and 6lbs line, and soon had a carp in the net weighing 8lbs.

A further six fish followed; no specimens, and all of the same stamp, plus four plump roach.

Long-time member Stephen Brookes fished the Trent & Mersey Canal to the right of the Billinge wide where the new marina is being built.

He saw a number of fish in distress, swimming on the surface trying to get oxygen, and did not have a bite.

Conscious of a pollution incident there earlier this year, he reported it.

More positive news is that, along with other anglers, he fished to the left of the same wide the following weekend and caught between five and six pounds of small fish.

A regular visitor to the Trent & Mersey at Croxton Lane, in Middlewich, he says catches of 5lbs - mainly roach, small skimmers, hybrids and gudgeon - are to be had.

Veteran Jimmy Byrne put a weight of 3-9-0 on the scales to win our latest match for disabled and over 60s on the Trent & Mersey Canal at School Road.

Nets consisted of mainly gudgeon and small roach, plus the odd skimmer.

Vice-president Geoff Brooks ended up second with 3-3-4.

Keep sending to me your catch reports - it's useful to let follow members know how waters are fishing - by email to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or call me on 01928 716238.
