A BIRCHWOOD High School pupil has represented her country in a series of football fixtures against Switzerland.

Poppy Lawson, from Fearnhead, was selected to play for England women’s under 15s side.

The team played two games against their Swiss counterparts and Lawson helped England to 2-0 and 3-1 victories.

Lawson secured her place on the team after a taking part in a training camp at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre.

14-year-old Poppy currently plays centre back for Manchester United and got the call-up after being observed by undercover England scouts.

The training camp was the second of two and 60 girls took part from all over the country.

Out of the 60 girls, the head coach reviewed their performance and selected 30 players to take part in the five-day training camp in Switzerland at the beginning of February.

During the camp, the girls had six two-hour sessions where they were observed and recorded as they played.

In addition to the fixtures, the girls had to study each day, completing work set by her teachers and had the chance to attend a cultural boat trip to the Rhine Falls, the biggest waterfall in Europe.

Poppy said: “It was an amazing opportunity and I was really excited and proud to wear the England kit.”
