HARRIET Knowles-Jones picked up her first senior title on Saturday to continue her excellent cross country form.

The former Lymm High School student was competing for Manchester University at the British Universities cross country championships and came home first in the women’s race.

Knowles-Jones, who is the current European under 20s cross country champion, was always in the leading group on an extremely muddy course at Hillingdon House Farm Sports Ground, which included a crossing of the River Pinn.

The course was longer than the Warrington Athletics Club member usually races and she held her energy in reserve for most of the race.

However, at the second river crossing, she made her move and successfully pulled away from the pack to take victory in 22mins 39.6secs.

She also led her Manchester University group to eighth place in the team standings with her performance.

Joining Knowles-Jones in the race was Warrington clubmate Katie Lowery, who was running for Edinburgh University.

She finished 47th by clocking 25mins 11.4secs as Edinburgh just missed out on a team bronze medal.

Three Warrington Athletics Club members picked up medals at the Cheshire Schools cross country championships on Saturday.

Lauren Ferris kicked off the day in style, picking up a silver medal in the senior girls’ race while clubmate Rachel McQuillan was not far behind in eighth.

Orla Gregory also had an excellent run in the junior girls’ race as she won bronze. She led home a Warrington contingent of Eva Ferris (15th) Maisie Bell (21st), Isabel Houghton (32nd) and Lisa Halliday (43rd).

Luke Gamble just missed out on a medal in the senior boys’ race as he came fourth, with Daniel Fox (8th), Jack Stubbings (10th), Jack Wadsworth (11th) and Charlie Turnbull (16th) also finishing well.

The minor girls’ race saw Molly Wormald, Emily Entwistle and Lucie Davies finish together in 10th, 11th and 12th respectively, while Shauna Clarke was 30th, Georgia Oakes 45th and Grace Callaghan 47th.

Marcus Trevithick (14th) was Warrington’s highest-placed finisher in the minor boys’ race ahead of Jacob Cox (27th), while Ben Pucill was unable to continue after a fall.

In the intermediate girls’ race, Lucy Baxter finished 12th with Olivia Baker 16th, Faye Humphreys 25th and Isla Kenworthy 32nd.

Elsewhere, two Warrington runners took part in the Greater Manchester Schools cross country championships at Heaton Park on Saturday.

Amelia Smithers finished 29th in the minor girls’ race in a time of exactly nine minutes, while Siobhan Gregory clocked 17mins 18secs to finish 22nd in the intermediate girls’ race.
