Altrincham 1 Warrington Town 2

JAMIE McDonald struck in injury time as Warrington Town won a dramatic FA Trophy replay at Altrincham

Jordan Hulme opened the scoring just after half time at Moss Lane, but Liam Goulding levelled matters late on before McDonald's dramatic intervention.

Yellows started the game well, pressing the home defence high and creating the first opening when Dylan Vassallo’s clever backheel sent Gerard Kinsella storming into the box.

However, the stand-in right-back’s cross evaded everyone inside the area.

Sean Williams then had an effort from range deflected into Robins keeper Anthony Thompson’s hands before the hosts gradually assumed control, with Max Harrop’s long-range effort being saved comfortably by Tony McMillan.

Their biggest threat was winger John Johnston and it was he who had the first half’s clearest opening.

After dazzling the Yellows defence to advance into the area, McMillan came out to save with his feet.

The Town stopper was far less convincing shortly after when he spilled Johnstone’s cross and the ball spiralled towards goal, but Liam Goulding was able to clear before Jordan Hulme could poke it home.

Johnston forced McMillan into a save at his near post just before the break as the two high-flying Evo-Stik Premier Division sides produced another goalless half of football.

Altrincham stepped up a gear after half time and were rewarded with the game’s opening goal within eight minutes of the restart.

A corner was not properly cleared and Hulme produced an impressive turn and finish past the diving McMillan.

The minutes immediately after the goal saw Yellows step up the tempo, with Dylan Vassallo blasting into the side netting before Jamie McDonald could not react in time when Bakkor’s scuffed shot fell nicely for him.

Carden introduced Stephen Milne, signed recently from Bootle, for his Yellows debut as the visitors continued to search for a leveller, but Altrincham remained solid and looked a threat on the break.

Johnston blasted a shot over before Goulding weaved his way through a couple of challenges and saw his effort deflected wide.

Altrincham dropped off, seemingly happy to protect their one-goal lead but James Poole came close to extending it when he skimmed a shot just wide.

The pressure grew and eventually, Yellows forced the ball in when a corner was flicked into the path of Goulding, who slammed home the loose ball.

Poole and Sean Williams blasted efforts over the bar at either end, while McDonald looked to have a strong penalty appeal waved away by referee Scott Simpson after appearing to be felled by Connor Hampson.

McDonald was to have the final say, however, after Vassallo found him with a perfect square ball and he slid the ball home in front of the jubilant travelling faithful.
