Warrington Town 1 Stourbridge 5

WARRINGTON fell to their heaviest defeat under Paul Carden as they were hammered by fellow high-flyers Stourbridge at Cantilever Park.

Yellows trailed at half time as quickfire goals from Stuart Pierpoint and Jordan Archer put the Glassboys in control.

Sean Williams’ penalty put Carden’s men back in with a shout, but Archer doubled his account before Leon Broadhurst and Paul McCone rounded off the rout as Town slipped to their second league defeat of the season.

The visitors’ pace troubled the hosts from the outset, with Tom Tonks firing an early effort straight at Tony McMillan.

It was a warning Yellows did not heed as they fell behind shortly after.

From a free kick wide on the right, the ball flicked off a Yellows head into the path of Pierpoint, who powered home a header.

It was not long before the lead was doubled and once again, a set piece proved Warrington’s downfall.

McMillan failed to claim a corner kick and, when the ball fell loose, Archer showed predatory instincts evening to prod home.

Yellows struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Josh Hine having an effort deflected wide before Rory McKeown flashed a long-range effort over the bar.

Broadhurst had a free-kick from the edge of the box well blocked before Abou Sanogo could not get clean contact on a header at the other end, meaning an easy save for visiting stopper Matt Gould.

Shortly after the break, Yellows were given a lifeline when the referee awarded a penalty after Jay McCarten was hauled to the ground, with Williams firing the spot kick down the middle.

However, their hope was short-lived after a superb through ball sliced the home defence open and Archer raced through to slot home.

Yellows’ vulnerability from set pieces was brought home to roost twice in quick succession after that as Broadhurst headed home at the far post to give Stourbridge a three-goal cushion.

The result was put beyond all doubt when McCone was left unmarked to bundle home.

All Yellows could muster in response was a scuffed effort by Hine which went straight to Gould on what was a horrendous night at the office for Yellows.
