WOLVES had no answer to Hull's second-half rally last night.

Four unanswered tries saw them overturn a 16-6 deficit to claim their first win against Tony Smith's men in six attempts.

So what went wrong at that stage in Smith's view?

"We probably made an error or two," he said.

"Their kicking game was very good. They were relying on us to make an error here or there and we probably just didn't find the energy that we needed to get into a few positions to cause them a little bit more of a challenge on their try line.

"I thought Hull's defence on their try line was outstanding. We just needed to come up with a little bit more energy at different stages but all credit to our opponents who were full of beans.

"We weren't far off but not quite at our best I didn't think."

Injuries during the game could have played a part in not finding the energy levels required at the crucial times, as could the fact that Wolves were on a Sunday to Friday turnaround in matches compared to Hull's Friday to Friday.

Smith said: "We had a couple of bumps and bruises but it was a pretty physical game and our boys handled it pretty well after what was a short turnaround for us.

"I'm pleased with their efforts. I don't think we're too far off our execution but not quite at our very best and when a team is as enthusiastic as Hull were you need to be pretty good, a bit better, but we weren't far off."

It was a disappointing night for the supporters after seeing the team run up a sequence of five successive wins ahead of the meeting with Hull.

Smith said: "We'd have loved to have won but Hull deserved to win.

"They were a little bit more energetic than us in some areas and forced a couple of things to happen a little bit better than we did.

"There wasn't much between the two teams. I thought both were very committed to their defence and worked hard to make it tough on their opponents to score.

"It was a high quality game, I thought.

"Generally, I think we've been progressing and building and been a little bit more consistent over the past five games, but I doon't think we've been brilliant.

"The fact that we lose a game doesn't mean it's all bad and everything goes out the window.

"We were very good defensively and we did a lot of good things. We made a couple of errors that sometimes in close games can hurt you.

"We've got some good momentum, we're developing well as a team and the fact we didn't win against another quality team who are in good form and put in a good effort doesn't make any of us suicidal or make us take a backward step.

"You want to win every game you play but you can accept it sometimes when a good team comes up with a good effort and are in good form.

"We will bounce back, I'm sure."
