RUGBY fans will find out this month which teams will be heading to The Halliwell Jones Stadium for next year’s Rugby League World Cup.

The town will stage two games in the autumn tournament while one team will set up camp at the Padgate Campus of the University of Chester for the duration of the event.

That was confirmed in November but the bid team will find out later in January which first round pool match will be staged in town. The home of the Warrington Wolves will also be a venue for a quarter final tie.

The RFL will also announce where the semi final and final of the tournament will take place, with Old Trafford and Hull’s KC Stadium front runners.

The bid has been boosted by the near sell-out success of the Australia v New Zealand Four Nations game in October.

Wolves chief executive Andy Gatcliffe says the World Cup will provide a further boost to the town – and not just the fans who head through the turnstiles.

He added: “We’ve got the facilities and being one of four outstanding bids has got to stand us in good stead.

“It’s important to get the World Cup.

“We have identified that if we host two games, it’s worth £2.3 million to the borough economy.”

The decision will be announced towards the end of the month.
