HOLLINS Green Community Shop has won a national award.

The not-for-profit store in Manchester Road, Rixton, was named Retailer of the Month by wholesaler Palmer and Harvey.

Run by manager Julie Atkinson, four paid staff and 30 volunteers, the shop was recognised for its youth engagement projects, championing the independent sector and providing value for its customers.

The convenience store also offers tea and coffee for the village’s pensioners, free Wi-Fi for customers and a book exchange following the closure of the mobile library.

Julie, from Briar Avenue, and the team teach primary school children about running the shop and there are plans to create on-site allotments which will be tended to by the youngsters before the fruit and veg are sold in store.

Hollins Green Community Shop also stock produce from independent brewers, butchers and bakers in the area with all profits rolled back into investing in the shop’s future and community projects.

Julie, who previously worked at University Academy Warrington, said: "Winning the Retailer of the Month award means so much to us - what an achievement.

"Not only does Hollins Green Community Shop offer convenience products, it has also become a real hub for the village, where people can enjoy a friendly conversation over a hot drink and a slice of homemade cake.

"I pride myself in offering a friendly face and unique customer service. As our store motto says: 'It’s your community, it’s your village, it’s your shop'."

Hollins Green Community Shop opened earlier in the year in response to the village's parish plan when a 2011 survey revealed that the majority of residents wanted a convenience store.

The nearest supermarket to Rixton is three and a half miles away.

Jez Pegg, sales and marketing director at Palmer and Harvey, added: "While Hollins Green Community Shop is a relatively new business they have already made a clear impression on the community.

"In just four months Julie and her team’s proactive approach has brought the shop to our attention.

"We wish them every success in their continued efforts to reinvigorate and improve their community and look forward to supporting them ongoing."
