THE 'cake jar' craze has reached Warrington thanks to a Fearnhead baker.

Lindsay Albon has opened White Lace Cakes at Warrington Market as an expansion of her wedding cake business that she runs from home.

At the shop and cafe you can stop in for a brownie or cream tea but you can also take away cake jars which are basically sweet treats that are crammed and layered into small jars to give them a unique appearance and texture.

It has been a bit of a whirlwind for Lindsay since she was made redundant from her job of 11 years at telecommunications company TalkTalk.

The former Birchwood High student took up baking simply as a way to 'fill the void' at first.

But, with an A-level qualification in art, Lindsay found she had a natural talent for designing and making intricate wedding cakes when she created one for her friend's big day two and a half years ago.

She then took the plunge and converted the garage of her family home into a studio and White Lace Cakes was born.

The 36-year-old said: "I ended up at home not really knowing what to do next. My mum’s always been a bit of a baker. She would have homemade pies ready when I got back from school and things like that.

"But in the past I’ve always been too busy and just started baking when I needed to fill a bit of a void.

"I was using YouTube to learn how to do things and it just grew. It started as a hobby that rapidly evolved. I’ve got 80 weddings this year and I had to close my order book in January because, as one person, I couldn’t do any more."

The shop is more of a family affair though.

Lindsay’s husband Graham has come on board since she moved to Warrington Market and her oldest daughter Lauren, 16, is also helping out.

The family are in the unit which was formerly Sweeney's butchers and it is unrecognisable.

Lindsay, who attended the University of Chester's Warrington campus, added: "When we first took a look around and we both liked the idea of it I drew a picture of what I wanted it to look like and it actually looks exactly like it.

"We hope we’ve transformed it. We just wanted it to be a nice little place but we appreciate these things take time to take off.

"I’m still finding my feet but they’re a lovely lot at Warrington Market.

"We do afternoon teas, cream teas and anything baked you can think of. Everything is homemade and brownies are something we are going to specialise in. They seem to be going down an absolute storm."

Lindsay's day usually starts at 6am and with five kids, Lauren, Mia, 13, Evan, 12, Neve, eight, Rowan, four, and another 'bun in the oven' due at Christmas her work and home life are pretty hectic.

She said: "The kids are lovely but it means we’re a full-time busy family. It’s non-stop. We don’t do things by halves to say the least.

"I love being involved in people’s weddings though. I travel to venues all over Cheshire and it’s so nice rocking up to people’s big day

It’s stressful but it very much feels like a privilege. I did a wedding that was in OK Magazine for someone who was in Hollyoaks.

"And I’m now known for my work by the high end ‘Cheshire set’ so that can add to the pressure as the cake has to make a big statement. Every trip with a cake is the most stressful journey you can take."
