VANDALS setting fire to Vulcan sports field are helping travellers illegally set up camp on the site.
As reported in last week's Newton and Golborne Guardian, travellers got on to the site last week.
And it has emerged that firefighters have had to cut locks to the site to get access on more than one occasion during the past month to put out grass fires.
When they leave, the travellers then move on.
A source said: "The site is secure but the firefighters have to cut the gate to get on. They have been offered keys for the site but have refused them."
The fire service confirmed it could not store keys at the station.
Meanwhile, the travellers have left the site after arriving last week.
Developers St Modwen Estates refused to move the travellers after saying the sports field is not their land.
The site is to be converted into a huge development complete with houses and a massively redeveloped sporting network.
