PROPOSALS that could see Lymm village closed to traffic have brought a passionate reaction on both sides of the debate.

The Warrington Guardian reported on the scheme two weeks ago which was discussed at a meeting of Lymm Parish Council following a suggestion from architects Randellwhite.

Under the plans, the very centre of Lymm at Eagle Brow would be largely closed off to traffic similarly to the temporary road closures of the past few months.

And David Birchall, who lives on Eagle Brow, said most of his neighbours had long been in favour of shutting the road at Bridgewater Street.

He said: "If they could close the road, we could have on-street parking along one side of the road.

"Before Warrington took over the running of Lymm, there was a study done on this in 1974.

"We could make a real feature of somewhere like the sunken gardens and the whole centre of Lymm."

But the plans have also met with large scale scepticism.

One typical call was from Connie Coll of Orchard Avenue, off Pepper Street.

She said the proposals would affect traffic elsewhere in the village especially on Pepper Street.

"I have lived here for 70 years and there is no need to change things now.

"This is our village and they have done enough damage to it already.

"This would make the traffic much worse," she added.

Lymm Parish Council has vowed to allow consultation work to start on the proposals as soon as possible.

The council is also looking into the legal implications of the closure of Eagle Brow an A road.
