IT'S a nautical life for one man who scooped a top naval prize.

Nick Lockwood, of West Avenue, Stockton Heath, joined the Royal Navy only three months ago but is already making an award-winning impression.

The 20-year-old picked up the trophy last week at his passing out parade.

The air technician said: "Training at HMS Raleigh has been superb.

"I have made many friends, worked harder than ever and now appreciate life's luxuries."

The former Bridgewater High School student picked up the award for the best overall marks during training at the Cornwall camp.

A Royal Navy spokesman said: "The trophy is awarded weekly to the class which achieves the best overall marks during training."

Over the past eight weeks, the 20-year-old has learnt the basic skills required by every sailor including seamanship, fire-fighting, weapons training and team work.

He will go to HMS Sultan, near Portsmouth, for specialist training to prepare him for a career in the Royal Navy.

Mr Lockwood followed in his brother Michael's footsteps by joining the Armed Forces.
