UKULELE playing may not sound like the average way of spending a Wednesday night but one woman is hoping she can bring a trend that has swept across London to Warrington.

Lorraine Bow, who is originally from Paddington, has a ukulele band as well as teaching classes in Lewisham schools after moving to London when she was 23.

Comedian Frank Skinner joined Lorraine on one of her karaUke nights while filming a documentary about banjo-player George Formby. The Brummie star visited Formby’s grave in Warrington last month.

Lorraine said: “We started a jam night on Wednesdays in the corner of a Soho pub with about 15 people and it’s grown from there.

“We broke the world record for the most ukele players in one place with 852 people and a song featuring the instrument has been number one in the American itunes chart.”

The former Woolston High school pupil is hoping to bring her unique karaUke nights to Warrington, karaoke with a live ukulele backing band, and start teaching in the area too.

She added: “I still have a lot of family in Warrington so hopefully if there’s enough interest I’ll be back home giving lessons soon.”
