AMBITIOUS plans to build a business park and industrial units to regenerate Widnes waterfront and create thousands of jobs have taken off.

Work by Cheshire-based company Forward Partnership is under way to clear a 2.5 acre site in Brown Street where a light industrial warehouse park will be built.

Also part of the £4m scheme are plans to build three modern, glass-front office blocks at the junction of Tan House Lane and Fiddlers Ferry Road.

"Both developments are designed to attract growth sector businesses, creating job opportunities for the local community and the wider Halton area," said Forward's Chris Wright.

"We are clearing the site to enable construction to start in January 2007."

The business park and office buildings are expected to be finished by next autumn.

Over the next six years Widnes Waterfront will benefit from £8m of European Regional Development funding, £7.5m from the North West Regional Development Agency and £1.5m from Halton Council.

Around 200 acres of derelict land is being transformed.
