YOUNGSTERS from a community project in Crewe are with their new rotavator - a specialist piece of garden equipment that will aid food production.

Wulvern Housing has presented the Brookhouse Urban Garden Scheme (BUGS) with the equipment as part of its support for the project's work at a Crewe allotment.

BUGS encourages children and young adults from the Brookhouse estate to develop an interest in gardening and healthy eating while caring for their environment.

The group has transformed the derelict allotment site into a wildlife and fruit garden and a productive vegetable and cut-flower garden.

Wulvern has seen a marked decrease in anti-social behaviour on the estate thanks to the project.

BUGS founder Susie Mitchell said: "We create a fun way of occupying the children and teaching them some basic lifelong skills.

"The rotavator will make life so much easier and will help us to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables we produce."
