WINNINGTON Park Senior Colts won a tight clash at Chester 22-19, in the league on Sunday.
Tom Ryder at prop had a fine game and capped it off with two tries. Geoff Leech and Gareth Phoenix also went over and Sean King kicked a conversion.
With three players on county duty, and a further five out through sickness and injury, the under-16s only fielded 14 players at Mold. However, full of confidence after their 30-10 win at Oldershaw the previous week (not a 30-10 loss as reported in the Guardian) the whole team put in a great effort, and no-one had a poor game in an 18-18 draw.
Winnington were never behind, but poor finishing and strong defence allowed Mold to stay in the game. Park's tries came from Paul Atkins and Tom Heaton with a conversion, penalty and drop goal from Duncan Steele.
The under-15s travelled to Caldy to play in their annual rugby festival, a six-team event, and won in style, justifying their position as county champions.
They drew with Mold and beat Denbigh, Newcastle, and Altrincham Kersal on the way to the last match against Caldy, who were also undefeated at that point.
Park duly disposed of them with some ease, winning 24-5. Simon Jennions starred with two tries.
The under-14s lost 22-15 at Wilmslow, Mike Hannah getting their try, while the under-13s were unlucky to lose 24-19 at home to Dukinfield.
Park's tries were scored by Robert Stagg, David Burchell, and Craig Lamb, and Chris Bettley was successful with two of his three conversion attempts.
The minis all played away at Sandbach: under-12s lost to their A team 35-0, but beat their B team 14-7. (tries: Gareth Clwyd-Jones, Matthew Harwood. cons: Jonathan Blackburn 2).
The under-11s drew 7-7 (try: William Basnett. con: Ross Mather); under-10s played two games winning the first 25-5 and the second 10-5; under-9s played two games, losing the first by 3 tries to 1 (Carl Bellis), and the second 5-4 (Alex Butcher 2, Steven MacNicoll 2).
TOWN TEENAGERS TRIUMPH
NORTHWICH RUFC under-14s gained a victory at home to Wirral Rugby Club on Sunday.
Northwich were slow to settle and made two serious defensive errors, both of which allowed Wirral to score tries, one of which was contested.
Northwich were 12-0 down before they lifted their game and tries from Ivor Robinson and Stuart Eyres made it 12-10 just before half-time.
Second half pressure yielded two deserved tries for Northwich through Lee Almark and David Flood and to wrap up a 20-12 win for the boys in black.
The Northwich tries were scored by Ivor Robinson, Stuart Eyres, Lee Almark and David Flood.
