The plans for King Edward Road - from Adam's Hill to Canute roundabout - could include the introduction of clearer road markings.
Drivers currently form two lanes of traffic.
"It is unclear what the exact plans will be because we are just in the discussion stage at the moment," said a borough council spokesman.
The spokesman could not comment on whether Clr George Walton's ideas to make the road two lanes from the roundabout and just one approaching would be included in the plans.
"Once we have drawn up the proposals we will present them to the town council and feed their ideas back into final plans," she said.
