In a statement faxed to the Knutsford Guardian, a spokesman confirmed the man had agreed to go on 'personal leave' while an investigation was carried out.

"We can confirm that concerns were raised about some aspects of a surgeon's clinical work," he said.

"In line with good practice, it was agreed with the surgeon that he should take a period of leave, without prejudice, while the concerns were investigated by an independent expert from outside the region."

The man has not been named by the East Cheshire NHS Trust, but he is believed to be Gavin Denton.

It is not known what he specialised in, but it is believed he regularly appeared as a professional witness at inquests into the deaths of patients following surgery.

A report into his work is due to be completed soon.

"Until then it would not be appropriate to speculate or comment further," said the spokesman.

Worried patients or relatives can phone a helpline which is open from 8am-8pm today (Wednesday), Thursday and Friday.
